HERITAGE SITES
The Spaniards were the first Europeans who settled in Jamaica.
In May 1494, Christopher Columbus arrived in Jamaica. It is reported that the first Roman Catholic Mass was celebrated here in that year.
The English captured Jamaica from the Spaniards and brought with them the Church of England. Later other religions from Europe and North America came to the island. Jamaica has the reputation of having the largest number of churches per sq. mile.
All these denominations brought with them their rituals and styles, and so Jamaica now has a rich collection of old churches. These Churches have their own history. Many of the original structures were destroyed or damaged by earth-quakes and or hurricanes.
Touring these Church buildings, viewing their architecture, monuments etc. is an interesting and inspiring experience.
There are other historical sites, buildings and monuments throughout the country to be explored.

GREAT HOUSES
Great House is the name given to the residences of the plantation owners during the slavery era in Jamaica. Some notable ones are Greenwood Great House and Rose Hall Great House. These Great Houses are quite intriguing physically, and tell many tales as legend has it.
MUSEUMS
Our museums tell of Jamaica’s rich history and give insight into our life at earlier times. Jamaicans are hybrids- mixtures of many races. Visit some of our museums and learn more about us, look at our master pieces in art work.
